Sponsoring education as part of Stavian Chemical’s CSR endeavor

As Stavian Chemical Joint-stock Company has been growing strongly in recent years, the company has become more aware of its responsibility as a corporate citizen to contribute to the communities where it operates, says an executive at the supplier of plastic resin products and chemicals.

School building

Last month, Stavian Chemical, in collaboration with iVolunteer Vietnam and local agencies in hinterland communities, inaugurated five school sites in Lai Chau, Dien Bien and Son La provinces, at a total cost of over VND1 billion, providing decent schooling facilities for students in poverty-stricken areas ahead of the new school year. The new school sites – one in Dien Bien, and two each in Son La and Lai Chau – were constructed with the company’s funding via the Wishes for Children program.

All the school sites were built with environmentally friendly materials and were equipped with quality electrical and lighting equipment to ensure high-quality facilities for students.

Vu Thuy Linh, director for communications and public relations at Stavian Chemical, says the company has paid special attention to CSR activities, so it has decided to work with Project Power 2000 and local Youth Leagues to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for students in these mountainous areas. The company expects to gradually replace deteriorating school facilities with modern ones and “we will continue to spread this value to the community in the future.”

Response to the pandemic

Social responsibility has been maintained at the company as a regular activity. Last year, when the Covid-19 pandemic was wreaking havoc on the economy, Stavian Chemical responded quickly by making prompt donations worth billions of Vietnam dong to localities and agencies in need of help.

Last October, for example, the company donated a cold-storage facility for vaccines worth VND 500 million to Hanoi-based Duc Giang Hospital, which was a major frontline hospital for Covid-19 treatment in the capital city. Two months earlier, it donated VND850 million to the Ministry of Health to acquire cold-storage facilities.

Further, Stavian Chemical last August donated two sets of Layer 3 24 switch worth VND 300 million to the Medical University Hospital, 2,800 sets of protective gear worth VND700 million to Viet-Duc University Hospital, and VND 500 million in cash to the Vietnam Fatherland Front of Hung Yen Province, among others.

Apart from direct social support, the company has also attended to environmental protection.

In February this year, in response to the Prime Minister’s call to plant one billion trees, Stavian Chemical donated VND100 million to the campaign to conserve nature and enhance biodiversity in the country.

Such a social activity is not unusual for a company that has committed to sustainable development. On its website, the company management has reiterated this goal, saying: “Sustainability is one of the key factors we are focusing on in every business decision. We are committed to contributing to the global community development, evolving our company’s corporate citizenship, and demonstrating social and environmental responsibilities.”

First established in 2009 under the name of Opec Plastics, the company changed its name to Stavian Chemical last year. In its journey of 13 years, Stavian Chemical has gained strong development, being ranked 29th among the 500 largest private enterprises in Vietnam and 71st among the 500 largest enterprises in Vietnam, according to the 2021 VNR500 Report of the Vietnam Report. Stavian Chemical was also among the top 6 largest chemical distributors in the Asia-Pacific region and the top 22 largest chemical distributors worldwide, according to the ICIS Ranking in 2020.

Last year, the company as a major supplier of plastic resin and biodegradable plastic products earned total revenue of US$1.2 billion.

However, it is not all about high growth, as the company is targeting sustainable development as the ultimate goal.

In an encounter with the local media about the company’s future development, a senior leader of the company said that in the next phase, “Stavian Chemical will continue to develop and define our position as a prestigious multi-industry and multinational corporation that contributes to the socio-economic development of the communities where we operate. At the same time, we also uphold sustainable development with high responsibility to society.”
